Hospitalist Growth
In January 2007, Dr. Alberto Gaitan joined O’Connor Hospital as its first Hospitalist. Now after a year at O’Connor, the question still comes up as to what is a Hospitalist?

A Hospitalist's duty is to provide prompt, efficient, and competent care to hospitalized patients.

At O’Connor Hospital, Dr. Gaitan provides care and support to patients.

He is actively involved with the Restorative Rehabilitative Care or Swing Bed Program at O’Connor. He typically will manage most aspects of patient care after admission – not only providing medical care but also organizing subsequent services.

Hospitalists often contact the patient’s physician by telephone, admission or discharge.

A benefit of the Hospitalist is a decrease in length of hospital stay for patients admitted. Currently the majority of Hospitalists are board-certified internists.

CNN recently reported on the role of Hospitalists and the growth of this role in hospitals in the United States. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN Senior Medical Correspondent, points out that Hospitalists care for patients only when they’re in the hospital, allowing the primary care doctor their office patients. Gupta also pointed out that Hospitalists have time to go over test results, talk to family members and answer questions.

“Sometimes a luxury in the medical world," he said. "Studies show that as patient satisfaction rises, hospital costs come down.”
